Ancestry DNA

Hi Everyone

It's been a while since I wrote a blog post on here.  A lot has happened since the last....

I've had a baby for a start.

Meet Chloe. She was born in July and she's a little character.  She's always giggling and smiling and obviously, at 9 months, definitely keeping me on my toes.

I've also completed the first part of my Masters degree in Local History.  I've really enjoyed it so far and I'm looking forward to writing my dissertation.

Anyway, enough about that.  I have done my Ancestry DNA test.  I was quite surprised (well I guess not really knowing how we're all immigrants really) that according to Ancestry I'm not as English as I thought I was.

As I said, when you consider the United Kingdom, and particularly Great Britain was invaded so many times, it makes sense that I am not solely English.  However, I would be intrigued as to how they come to these percentages.

I have 142 matches apparently.  However, most of these are 4th cousins or more distant.  There are some who I already know I'm connected to, although it's interesting to see some new names.  Especially as I'm always convinced I'm not related to anybody.

If I get any connections and responses I will post what I have found out.

For those interested in how long it takes, here are my timings.

Kit ordered  - 28th February 2018
Kit received - 5th March 2018
Kit activated - 6th March 2018
Kit returned - 7th March 2018
Kit received by Ancestry - 20th March 2018
Lab Processing began - 6th April 2018
Results received - 13th April 2018

So actually overall it was pretty quick.  Definitely a lot faster than I expected.  The kit was very simple to follow and you just fill up a little vial with saliva, add a solution, give it a shake and post it back.  I think it cost me about £72 but I also had cash back through quidco so got some 10% back.  Also once you order it you get offered half price Ancestry for a year and again I got cashback through quidco.

You can download your raw data and upload it to other sites which give you other matches.  For example, I have uploaded mine to Gedmatch and through that you can compare your results with another person.

Overall it has definitely given me a boost in my research and we shall see what it reveals as time goes on.
